Proper care of your jewellery can help keep it in its original beautiful, sparkling condition for years to come. It is important to remember that some gemstones are made from a very hard material and can be abrasive to other gemstones – for example, diamonds are commonly known as the hardest substance in the world, but one diamond can scratch another diamond and can definitely scratch other gemstones. There are some easy to remember do’s and don’ts when it comes to caring for your jewellery:

Do

  • Have your local jeweller clean, polish and check your jewellery at least once a year.
  • Clean your diamonds with a mild detergent and soft brush or a specialised jewellery cleaner supplied by your local jeweller.
  • Pearls need to be re-strung regularly to avoid breakage. Having your pearls knotted between each one will prevent the loss of pearls if the string should break.
  • Pearls can be washed with mild soap and water and a soft cloth.
  • Store softer stones such as opals and pearls away from harder stones such as diamonds to avoid scratching.
  • Take your jewellery off before bed or while participating in sport to avoid kinking or breakage.

Don’t

  • Wear your jewellery when using cleaning chemicals that can damage your jewellery.
  • Wear your jewellery around chlorine as it can cause pits in gold and can tarnish sterling silver.
  • Wear your jewellery while doing heavy manual work as even diamonds can chip.
  • Wear your jewellery in the shower as the soap will dull the appearance.
  • Clean your jewellery with anything other than a specialised jewellery cleaner or mild detergents.
  • Use toothpaste to clean your jewellery.
